The building was originally a well-known shop, Martin’s that dates back to at least the mid 19th century. The location of the facility is ideally situated for its purpose, close to the centre of the town of Rush on the Mill Bank Green, close to the bus route, adjacent to national school, the Millbank Theatre and the library.
Fingal County Council purchased Martin’s Shop in 2006 in response to the identified needs of young people in the area for a youth facility. The primary vision for this building was to develop it to act as a youth facility and with this vision in mind a committee was formed to raise funds to renovate it and equip it for use. In 2010 a funding application was made to Pobal. This application was made in consultation with the local community, Rush Community Council, Swords Youth Service, Foroige who made the application and other local youth groups that advised on the design and layout of the building.
The application was successful. Development work was carried out to one half of the building. This was sufficient to allow youth and community activities to begin in the facility. The hope remains that the entire facility will be completed in the future.
